Get Rid of McAfee and Norton and AVG etc. They're Not Required.
That anti-virus software you've got isn't protecting you against the latest exploits, and it's likely killing your performance at the same time.

Of course it's important to be protected against viruses, they might be quite rare these days but they're still lurking around out there. Windows Defender, which is free and built-in to Windows 10 is the perfect free anti-virus software you've always wanted. There are no annoying popups or ads, and none of that "3 days left to give us another forty quid!" kind of stuff. It sits quietly in the background, updating itself, and doing an awesome job.
Unfortunately, you can't get away with just an anti-virus program now. You need something that will protect you against modern exploits on the fly - and for that I recommend Malwarebytes. And it's worth getting your plastic out for the premium version because that works in the background to protect you against things that looks dodgy as you work whereas the free version only runs on demand.
Windows Defender + Malwarebytes
It's all you need. We've been running like this since 2015 when we upgraded to Windows 10 (you DO need Windows 10!) and it's saved us from some nasties we have downloaded via FTP from some old websites that have been attacked.
But don't just take our word for it, the guys at How-To-Geek came to the same conclusion and wrote a more in-depth article about it here.
Getting Rid of It - All of it!
A straight uninstall won't clear it off the system. Some of these anti-virus programs are like the viruses they're supposedly protecting you against! They infect every little corner of your computer. I strongly recommend using Revo Uninstaller Pro. This is another bit of software I've been using for years. After the normal uninstall it will scan for leftover registry entries and folders and files and let you delete them. Revo is worth the paid upgrade and keeping in your digital toolbox.
